"As Crimea vote looms, cartographers rethink region’s maps"

Monmonier, MarkProfessor Mark Monmonier was quoted in a recent Toronto Star article that looks at the issues map-makers face in risking to legitimize one side over the other if they redraw Russia’s boundaries to include Crimea and the U.S. and the United Nations refuse to recognize the vote result made by the 10-person committee at the National Geographic Society. Monmonier points out that "when dealing with territorial disputes, most U.S. mapping companies and commercial cartographers take their direction from the State Department." 03/18/14
