"Food aid for the 21st century"

Bertini, CatherineProfessor Catherine Bertini has co-authored a recent piece for Politico that investigates the Obama administration’s food aid proposal to issue cash-grants that would allow for the purchase of food nearer to hunger crisis areas, resulting in enormous cost savings. Current rules require the bulk of food aid from the U.S. to be purchased at home and then transported on U.S.-flagged ships to areas where it’s needed. The USAID estimates that up to half of US spending on food aid now goes to ocean transportation costs.
