Elman op-ed on academic freedom and hate speech
Appearing under the Editors' title "Moving on from Controversy," The News-Gazette of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, has published an op-ed by Miriam F. Elman (Associate Professor, Political Science). The op-ed was featured in print as a Guest Commentary in the newspaper's Sunday December 21 issue, and was also posted to the newspaper's online edition.
The op-ed was previously featured as a 'Top Op' in The Times of Israel.
Focusing on the connection between academic freedom and hate speech, the op-ed discusses the ongoing controversy generated by the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign's decision to revoke a tenured job offer to Dr. Steven Salaita in August in the wake of a series of statements he made on Twitter, which many deemed to be anti-Semitic.
Elman's prior op-ed on this topic critiqued an SU University Senate resolution, introduced in October, which called on the University of Illinois to honor Dr. Salaita's contract. The op-ed was featured last month on the online media sites Legal Insurrection and Truth Revolt. 12/23/14
