Model UN team named Outstanding Delegation at spring 2019 conference

Model UN spring 2019The Syracuse University-College of Arts and Sciences-Maxwell School Model United Nations team was named an “Outstanding Delegation” for its portrayal of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the National Model United Nations conference held April 13-19 in New York City. Eighteen students majoring in international relations participated as delegates in this academic conference, which drew nearly 6,000 college and university students from approximately 100 countries to Manhattan across two 1-week sessions for a simulation of global diplomacy. 

Erin Hamilton ‘19 and Baylee Wright ‘19 served as Co-Head Delegates for the delegation. The delegates participated in the following committees: 

  • UNGA First Committee (GA1 Disarmament/International Security): Sara Freisem ’19 and Drew Maier ‘19
  • UNGA Second Committee (GA2 Economic & Financial): Leah Killian ‘19 and Kelsey Huebner ‘20
  • UNGA Third Committee (GA3 Social, Humanitarian, Cultural): Alex Wilgocki ’20 and Cassie Torres ‘19
  • Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal justice (CCPCJ): Katherine Davis ‘19
  • UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF): Erin Hamilton ‘19
  • UN Development Program (UNDP): Baylee Wright ‘19
  • UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO): Lara Hicks ‘20
  • World Food Program (WFP): Kara Foley ‘20
  • Committee on Peacekeeping (C-34): Makaela Mendrala ’19 and Abby Neuviller ‘19
  • UN Human Rights Council (HRC):  Taylor Krzeminski ‘20
  • UN Environment Assembly (UNEA): Jenna Landsman ’19 and Steven Collins ‘21
  • UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COP): Laurel Bennett ’19 and Nasim Ziad ‘19

In addition to the designation as an “Outstanding Delegation,” several delegates won awards in their committees. Katherine Davis’19 won a “Best Position Paper” award in CCPCJ, Sara Freisem ‘19 and Drew Maier ‘19 won a “Best Position Paper” award in GA1, Alex Wilgocki ’20 and Cassie Torres ’19 won a “Best Position Paper” award in GA3, and Makaela Mendrala ’19 and Abby Neuviller ’19 won a “Best Position Paper” award in C-34.  Lara Hicks ’20 won a “Best Delegate” peer-elected award in UNIDO, and Kara Foley ’20 won a “Best Delegate” peer-elected award in WFP.

The next conference opportunity will bring 12-16 delegates from SU CAS MAX’s International Relations Program to our nation’s capital, for the NMUN-DC Conference November 8-11, 2019.
