Model UN team named distinguished delegation at NYC conference

Model UN Spring 2018 A Syracuse University/Maxwell team participating in the National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference in March was named a “Distinguished Delegation” for its portrayal of Poland. The conference, held in New York City, drew more than 5,000 students, more than half from outside the United States. Nineteen students participated as delegates:

  • General Assembly First Committee (GA1 - Disarmament & International Security) - Alexandra Pereira ‘18 and Baylee Wright ‘19
  • General Assembly Second Committee (GA2 - Economic & Financial) - Sarah Freisem ‘19 and Juliet Juchnewich ‘19
  • General Assembly Third Committee (GA3 - Social, Humanitarian, & Cultural) - Taylor Krzeminski ‘19 and Shalom Yun ‘20
  • General Assembly Fifth Committee (GA5 - Administrative and Budgetary) - Leah Killian ‘19 and Tara O’Brien ‘19
  • International Telecommunications Union (ITU) - Erin Hamilton ‘19
  • UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) - Michael Barbone ‘15/MAIR ‘18
  • International Organization for Migration (IOM) - Kara Foley ‘20 and Abby Neuviller ‘19
  • World Food Program (WFP) – Jack Woltman ‘18
  • Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) - Michelle Guo ‘18 and Alex Wilgocki ‘20
  • UN Security Council (UNSC) - Kayla Goldstein ‘18 and Dash Krempel ‘18
  • UN Security Council (UNSC-A)  Katie Conti ‘18 and Taylor Dunne ‘18

In addition, delegates won the following awards:

  • Sarah Freisem ‘19 and Juliet Juchnewich ‘19 won Best Delegates in GA2
  • Taylor Krzeminski ’19 and Shalom Yun ’20 won Best Position Paper in GA3
  • Michael Barbone ’15 won Best Position Paper in UNEA
  • Michelle Guo ’18 and Alex Wilgocki ’20 won Best Position Paper in the OP
  • Kayla Goldstein ’18 and Dash Krempel ’18 won Best Delegates in the UNS
  • Katie Conti ’18 and Taylor Dunne ’18 won Best Position Paper in UNSC-A

The team will present a slideshow and panel discussion about their conference experience on Tuesday, April 17 at 3:30 PM in 204 Maxwell Hall.
