Public Administration and International Affairs Degree Programs

Efficiently structured and broadly applicable

The Maxwell School is home to two very strong professional degrees in public policy, administration and international affairs — producing graduates with the fundamental public management and policy analysis skill set required by employers in domestic and international public, non-profit, and private sector organizations:

Master of Public Administration. The Maxwell School's top-ranked MPA program is concentrated and focused, earned in one year. It offers leadership, management, and analytical skills applicable to not only the public sector, but an array of mission-based organizations serving the public good, domestic and international. The skills earned in the MPA are highly transferrable — allowing graduates to work across policy areas and various sectors throughout their careers. (Learn more at Master of Public Administration.)

MA in International Relations (MAIR). Earned in 16 months, the MAIR combines theoretical, conceptual, and historic knowledge from the social sciences with managerial and analytical skills. The MAIR is capped by a global internship, facilitated through nearly 20 learning centers around the globe and in Washington, DC.  (Learn more at MA in International Relations.)

Maxwell's MPA is top-ranked by U.S.News & World Report and the MAIR is among the nation's top 15, according to Foreign Affairs.

In addition, Maxwell offers these specialized joint/dual degrees:

Joint MPA/IR.  This program combines PAIA's two signature degrees, in a program that is easily completed in two years. ( Learn more about our MPA/IR program.)

MS Public Relations/MA International Relations. This program combines the MAIR with an MS in public relations to serve careers in organization advocacy and communication. ( Learn more about our MSPR/MAIR program.)

MAIR/Economics.  This program is especially appropriate for students interested in international development, global trade and international financial systems. ( Learn more about our MAIR/Economics joint degree program.)

Atlantis Program. This elite program allows students — half from the US, half from the EU — to earn a PAIA degree with a European degree in security or development policy. ( Learn more about our Atlantis dual degree options.)

Maxwell also offers midcareer versions of the PA and IR degrees; for more information visit Executive Education. Plus SU's College of Law works with Maxwell to provide JD/MPA and JD/MAIR degrees, while a major local teaching hospital and Maxwell collaborate on a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. For future scholars of PA, Maxwell offers a PhD in Public Administration.
