Global Connections

A world of experience, centered on public service

The great thing about studying at the Maxwell School is you engage in intense on-campus study with full-time professors in Syracuse, while building extensive links with practitioners and experts across the rest of the world.

Every Maxwell student's academic career offers the opportunity to conduct research on international matters or explore careers overseas. This is especially true for students pursuing the MA in International Relations (MAIR). In fact, international experience is so important that each MAIR student completes at least one required global internship, during their 16-month program. The internship caps classroom experience with irreplaceable, practical field experience that reinforces foundational concepts and professional skills.

"You can watch videos, read books, or hear from speakers and professors," says Catherine Bertini,  PAIA professor and former director of the World Food Programme. "But for the two students who went to work in Amman, Jordan, for the World Food Programme, supporting Syrian refugees, this was a totally different world — to be going every day to the camps, seeing first-hand what the issues are, what people are suffering through, how the organization tries to get food to them, how they resource it, and what are the pulls and tugs from the Syrian and Jordanian communities, the refugees, and donors. You can't teach that in class."

Maxwell offers academic and practicum experiences in nearly 20 countries on five continents. There are also opportunities for policy-relevant work and course attendance in Washington, D.C. through our Maxwell-in-Washington program.  In January 2014, Maxwell moved to our new headquarters, co-located with the prestigious Center for Strategic and International Studies, where we are always creating new and exciting program options for our students.  In all cases, the internship is integrated into the full program, and provides the opportunity to pair academic training with real-world experience and professional readiness.
