Conflict Resolution and Negotiation for Natural Resource Managers in Belize
Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration (PARCC) Director Catherine Gerard and Research Associate Professor Peter Castro traveled to Belmopan, Belize from March 10-20, 2017 to conduct two 2-day workshops and a 5-day workshop with University of Belize faculty and staff. This project is funded by a grant from the Oak Foundation. PARCC of the Syracuse University Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in partnership with University of Belize seeks to develop an innovative project broadly engaged on issues of environmental governance and conflict management and resolution in Belize, Central America. The project focuses on the practical and academic training and skills transfer of vital practice and theory related to conflict negotiation and management. The ultimate goal of the project is to strengthen the capacity of Belizean organizations to be able to continually address the nation’s and region’s critical challenges and better negotiate among the many internal constituencies regarding the future of their country.
The Environmental Governance and Conflict Management Workshop was held over two weekends, March 11 & 12, 2017 and March 18 &19, 2017. Workshop topics were: Introducing Collaborative Natural Resource Conflict Management; Engaging the Community; Mediation, Negotiation and Building Agreements; Mediation, and Negotiation and Building Agreements.
During the week of March 13-17, 2017 the Environmental Governance, Leadership, & Conflict Management Workshop was held for leaders from the community. This training took place at the La Milpa Workshop topics were: Leadership and Communication; Conflict Management Approaches in Action; Collaborative Natural Resource Conflict Management; Mediation, Negotiation and Building Agreements; Mediation and Negotiation and Building Agreements.
At the conclusion of each workshop, participants were awarded certificates from the University of Belize Environmental Research Institute.
