Areas of Specialization

The Faculty in the Department of Sociology at Syracuse University focus on inequalities and intersectionalities linked to gender, race and ethnicity, class, sexualities, age and disability in these four core areas of study:

4. Power, Capital, Culture

Faculty working in this area share critical approaches to examining culture as it shapes the production of identities and ideologies; power as it authorizes exclusions and provokes resistance; and capital as it intersects with historically-specific forms of governance, technology, embodiment, and labor. These critical approaches are deployed in research sites ranging from Caribbean political economy to U.S. urban day laborers, queer temporalities, the Black middle class, and South Asian-American immigration.
