To complete a major in sociology leading to a B.A. degree, students must complete a minimum of 30 credits (10 courses) in sociology according to the following distribution requirements:

Required Courses (12 credits):

SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology
SOC 318 Introduction to Research
SOC 319 Qualitative Methods in Social Research
SOC 406 Contemporary Sociological Theory

These courses can be taken in any order and are offered every semester.

Electives (18 credits):

These courses introduce students to various topics of concern to sociologists such as stratification, deviance, family, urbanization, power, community, and organization.  6 sociology courses numbered above 299


1 sociology course at the 200 level plus 5 courses numbered above 299

**The following course is strongly recommended for the major and is required for
   graduation with Distinction in Sociology:

SOC 495/Sociology Senior Thesis Research Seminar (3 credits)

Students get the chance to do field and/or library research to write a "conference paper" and present it at our annual spring symposium. This is an excellent opportunity to write about your own sociological interests, and ideally build upon some interest already generated in previous coursework.
