Nabatchi and Schwegman earn NASPAA distinctions
Maxwell Professor Tina Nabatchi, and a PhD student in public administration, David Schwegman, were each individually honored at the recently concluded NASPAA annual conference in Los Angeles. Nabatchi received the 2019 Leslie A. Whittington Excellence in Teaching Award and Schwegman was selected as a 2019 NASPAA Emerging Scholar.

EMPA student Katy Quartaro named a 2019 Tillman Scholar
In its third year as one of only 15 Pat Tillman Foundation University Partners, Syracuse University proudly announces Katy Quartaro ’18, G’20 as its 2019 Tillman Scholar. Quartaro, currently pursuing an executive master of public administration degree, is one of only 60 students nationwide to be awarded the prestigious scholarship.

PSc PhD students publish op-ed on the Brexit battle in Washington Post
Claire Sigsworth and Nathan Carrington, PhD students in political science, used survey research to analyze Brexit and its impact on the UK Supreme Court. Their article, titled "The Brexit battle has reached the U.K. Supreme Court. Here’s what you need to know," was published in the Washington Post. Their data suggest the overall legitimacy of Britain’s highest court will remain intact.

MPA student Wesley Wilson writes about the 90/10 loophole in The Hill
Wesley Wilson, MPA student and research assistant at the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University, makes the case for closing the 90/10 rule and improving opportunities for veterans in higher education in his article, "Here's why Congress must close the '90/10 loophole' in veterans' education," published in The Hill.

95-year-old Maxwell School welcomes its first freshman class
Beginning this fall, for the first time ever, students planning to major in the social sciences applied and were admitted directly to the Maxwell School. Prior to this, students applied to A&S, and they became a Maxwell student only if they declared a Maxwell major, usually sometime around the end of their sophomore year.

Peer to Peer provides insight into program participants’ experience
In March 2019, Humphrey Fellow Huong Ha shared her experience as an investigative journalist in Communist Vietnam. Her talk, “Truth Under Censorship: Investigative Journalism in Vietnam,” was one of 14 Peer to Peer presentations with speakers from 10 countries during the 2018-19 academic year.

New Maxwell Perspective features climate change research
The recently published edition of Maxwell Perspective — the School’s twice-annual magazine for alumni, students, faculty, staff, and other friends — is now available online. All full-length articles are available as individual webpages in the Maxwell Perspective section of this website.

New Robertson Fellows prepare to tackle international challenges
The Maxwell School is pleased to welcome three new Robertson Fellows within the 2019 – 2020 cohort of incoming public administration and international affairs graduate students. All three are pursuing dual degrees — a Master of Public Administration (MPA) and a Master of Arts in International Relations (MAIR) — to further their careers in international peace, security and development.

IR student Cynthia Wang receives Critical Language Scholarship
Cynthia Wang ’19 BA (IR) has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious Critical Language Scholarship and will study Azerbaijani in Azerbaijan. The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American graduate and undergraduate students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities.

Inaugural online EMPA grads celebrate at Convocation
Twenty-two members of Maxwell’s online Executive Master of Public Administration program (EMPA) participated in the 2019 Graduate Convocation. They are among the first graduates of the School’s online EMPA program, launched in July 2017 to advance the careers of experienced public service professionals.

Humphrey Fellows celebrate year of new perspectives
The 2018-19 Humphrey Fellows recently celebrated ten months of academic study, professional development, and cultural exchange at Syracuse University. The 13 fellows from 12 countries participated in activities that reflect the fellowship’s philosophy of engagement and Maxwell’s collaborative and interdisciplinary ethos.

"What the history of coups in the Middle East tells us about Venezuela," written by Drew Kinney '14 MA/'18 PhD (PSc), was published in the Washington Post. Kinney examines how coup attempts in the Middle East offer some clues — and warnings on how the crisis in Venezuela could end.

Maxwell students named 2019-20 Remembrance Scholars
Syracuse University’s Remembrance Scholar Selection Committee has chosen the 35 students who will be the 2019-20 Remembrance Scholars. The scholarships were founded as a tribute to—and means of remembering—the 35 students who were killed in the Dec. 21, 1988, bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

Maxwell faculty, students honored at One University Awards ceremony
Syracuse University held the third annual One University Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 12, 2019, in Hendricks Chapel, honoring dozens of members of the University community for their scholarship, teaching, academic achievement, leadership and service.

Model UN team named Outstanding Delegation at spring 2019 conference
The Syracuse University-College of Arts and Sciences-Maxwell School Model United Nations Team was named an “Outstanding Delegation” for its portrayal of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the National Model United Nations conference held April 13-19 in New York City. Eighteen students majoring in International Relations participated as delegates in this academic conference.
