Quetzil Castaneda, a scholar who works in Mexico, will be
presenting a paper entitled, "The Universal Citizen Heir: Archaeology, Tourism, and the Birth of Heritage in the Museum." He has provided the
following abstract: The emergence in the 21st century of ethical travel
and the figure of the Ethical Traveler brings into perspective a few
crucial relationships between tourism, archaeology and the museum that have been
fundamental in the sociocultural organization and practice of these
institutions. The figure of the ethical traveler stimulates the development in
this paper of the concept of the universal citizen heir, a subject positioning
born in the 19th century but only now visible at the beginning of the
21st. By tracking the birth of archaeology and tourism in the genealogy of the
museum this paper considers the meaning of heritage and the genealogy of this
discourse from the birth of the museum to the death of culture.
