Quetzil Castaneda, a scholar who works in Mexico, will be presenting a paper entitled, "The Universal Citizen Heir:  Archaeology, Tourism, and the Birth of Heritage in the Museum." He has provided the following abstract: The emergence in the 21st century of ethical travel and the figure of the Ethical Traveler brings into perspective a few crucial relationships between tourism, archaeology and the museum that have been fundamental in the sociocultural organization and practice of these institutions.  The figure of the ethical traveler stimulates the development in this paper of the concept of the universal citizen heir, a subject positioning born in the 19th century but only now visible at the beginning of the 21st.  By tracking the birth of archaeology and tourism in the genealogy of the museum this paper considers the meaning of heritage and the genealogy of this discourse from the birth of the museum to the death of culture.

We’re Turning 100!

To mark our centennial in the fall of 2024, the Maxwell School will hold special events and engagement opportunities to celebrate the many ways—across disciplines and borders—our community ever strives to, as the Oath says, “transmit this city not only not less, but greater, better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.”

Throughout the year leading up to the centennial, engagement opportunities will be held for our diverse, highly accomplished community that now boasts more than 38,500 alumni across the globe.
