China’s Understanding of America and the World As a rising global power, China faces a growing need for in-depth understanding of the United States and the rest of the world. What is the capacity of Chinese scholars and policy specialists in terms of American studies and international relations studies? Based on recent surveys of these two fields, this talk addresses the questions of what are China’s interests, where are the gaps, and how should the U.S. and other countries respond? Terry Lautz is a visiting professor at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School and former vice president of the Henry Luce Foundation.   He conducted a review of American studies in China during 2009-10 for the Ford Foundation, and was a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC in 2010. Dr. Lautz holds degrees from Harvard and Stanford University.
