The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: China Expands CCTV and Xinhua in the U.S. while America Eliminates Voice of America Broadcasts to China China is rapidly expanding its efforts to reach audiences in the U.S., while the United States Government is slashing funding for programs such as Voice of America's Mandarin broadcasts to China. VOA’s China section currently has 200 Mandarin-speaking reporters who develop and deliver news and information for audiences in China. What policy decisions are being made about government-supported media in Beijing and Washington? What are the upsides and downsides of their decisions for public diplomacy? Mr. Jay Henderson directed the Voice of America's East Asia and Pacific Division from 1998 to 2010. VOA broadcasts on radio, television, and Internet in ten Asian languages. Previously, he was with the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations in New York, and the Institute of International Education, based in Hong Kong. Henderson is a graduate of the East West Center and the University of Hawaii, with a Masters Degree in Asian Studies/Chinese History. He now directs Henderson International, a consulting firm in Washington, D.C.
