East Asia Program Presents: Margarita Extevez-Abe on Japanese Politics after Fukushima In August 2009, Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party lost a national election for the first time in 50 years. The new government came to power with promising change. Nearly 3 years later, Japan continues to stagnate. In the aftermath of last year’s triple disasters—M9 earthquakes, tsunami and a nuclear accident—Japan’s problems have multiplied. Can Japan recover from these problems? Or is it destined to decline? Professor Estévez-Abe provides some answers. Margarita Estévez-Abe is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University. Professor Estévez-Abe's research interests include Japanese politics and economy, comparative political economy, and studies of gender inequality. She’s the author of an award-winning book Welfare and Capitalism in Postwar Japan (Cambridge University Press, 2008).
