Maxwell African Scholars Union Presents: Extending Index Based Livestock Insurance in Kenya by John McPeak
This paper describes the approach taken to designing and extending index based livestock insurance. We contrast a game we developed that people from communities in Kenya played to extend insurance in 2008 with the version of the game played in 2009. The game was designed to illustrate key elements of the insurance product that became commercially available in 2010. Patterns of game play are analyzed. A monitoring and evaluation survey in 2010 asked questions about respondent’s knowledge of the insurance product. We
contrast the level of knowledge of the insurance product for people who reported they learned about insurance from the game compared to other methods. A tentative assessment of the cost effectiveness of the extension game is presented.
