The recent confrontation between Japan and its neighboring countries over disputed islands raises urgent questions about history, nationalism, and identity.  Dr. Tanaka will present his recent research on the role of Japanese pubic opinion in territorial disputes and discuss, more generally, how public opinion affects international border conflicts between states.

Seiki Tanaka is a post-doctoral fellow with the Institute for Security and Counter-Terrorism at Syracuse University.  He is a consultant for Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and was a visiting research fellow at Yale University from 2008 to 2011.  He holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Tokyo.
