U.S.-China Relations, MisPerceptions, and Policy: an Interdisciplinary Conversation

Many Americans view China as a threat, while many Chinese believe the U.S. wants to contain China.  Despite such mutual distrust, the two nations are economically interdependent and cultural exchange has never been greater. The panel will consider the role of perceptions in security and international policy; trade and economics; and culture and public diplomacy.

Panelists include James Steinberg, Dean and Professor of Social Science, International Affairs, and Law at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and former Deputy Secretary of State; Dr. Mary Lovely, Professor of Economics at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School and co-editor of the China Economic Review; and Dr. Terry Lautz of the East Asia Program and formerly of the Woodrow Wilson International Center.
