Dr. Zilka Spahic-Siljak

Deputy Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies at the University of Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Courageous people never allow the light of their humanity to be suppressed and defeated. They keep reminding us on the importance and sacredness of human life. Some women in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) protected that light in the face of overwhelming destruction and hopelessness caused by the war. Their stories reveal the strength conferred by having faith in humanity, goodness and love. Their courage to show the light from within their hearts and souls was strong enough to keep hope alive and enabled hidden and forgotten light in other people to start shining. Despite their courage and dedication to build peace in the local communitites of BiH and to advocate for structural changes in gender equality and the protection of women and children from violence they are excluded from the official negotiations of peace at the national and international level.
