Beginning in 1949, the musician KorlaPanditcreated nearly a thousand episodes of KTLA’s Adventures in Music, making him one of American television’s earliest music stars. In 1998, it was revealed that Panditwas not Indian but African American. In this presentation, Desai explores Pandit’sobject of impersonation –“the Hindu”–and the ways in which similar racializedrepresentations were constructed in mid-century American popular culture.
