Turkuler Isiksel
Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Science at Columbia University
Market Freedoms and Constitutionalism in the European Union
Dr. Isiksel’s talk will examine the status of fundamental rights norms within the European Union's supranational legal system, arguing that the concept of “fundamental freedoms” illustrates the EU's distinctive constitutional logic. Although the protection of individual rights is a prominent element of modern constitutional rule, the EU's regime of fundamental freedoms promotes a narrower goal, namely that of market integration. The talk is based on Dr. Isiksel’s book manuscript, “Europe's Functional Constitution: A Theory of Constitutionalism Beyond the State.”
Lunch will be provided.

We’re Turning 100!
To mark our centennial in the fall of 2024, the Maxwell School will hold special events and engagement opportunities to celebrate the many ways—across disciplines and borders—our community ever strives to, as the Oath says, “transmit this city not only not less, but greater, better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.”
Throughout the year leading up to the centennial, engagement opportunities will be held for our diverse, highly accomplished community that now boasts more than 38,500 alumni across the globe.
