Natures of Practice: The Work of the Agri-Horticultural Society of Punjab (1851-1885)
Formed in 1849 by the East India Company, the Agri-Horticultural Society of Punjab (AHSP) sought to modernize agricultural practices and expand production in the region. The AHSP’s discourses of modernization and improvement are crucially placed within the histories of environmental reform in nineteenth century colonial India. Rehman will show how constructions of nature, notions of technical expertise, and new urban subjectivities were circulated, assembled, and contested within the AHSP’s terrain of practice.Open to the public
