Sarah Pinto on Beyond Translation: The Story of Hysteria in India and the Ways Medicine Moves

Sarah Pinto, Associate Professor, Department of Anthropology, Tufts University

The history of the medical disorder known as hysteria in Europe and North America is well understood, but far less examined is the history of hysteria in non-Western settings. From contemporary diagnosing to colonial sciences of the mind to early Ayurvedic texts and the contemporary meanings that are drawn from them, this project asks what the South Asian presence of gendered afflictions of mind, emotion, and consciousness can tell us about theories of trauma response.
