EA presents: China at the Crossroads

Reform Challenges Ahead

After thirty-five years of miraculous change, China now faces a number of unprecedented challenges. Many observers believe that without fundamental reforms, national development may stagnate internally and China may become more assertive externally. Noted China scholar David Shambaugh will survey the challenges and discuss Beijing’s efforts to implement new reform policies under Xi Jinping’s leadership.

Professor Shambaugh teaches at George Washington University and is a nonresident fellow at the Brookings Institution. His books include China’s Communist Party: Atrophy and Adaptation and, more recently, China Goes Global: The Partial Power.

We’re Turning 100!

To mark our centennial in the fall of 2024, the Maxwell School will hold special events and engagement opportunities to celebrate the many ways—across disciplines and borders—our community ever strives to, as the Oath says, “transmit this city not only not less, but greater, better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.”

Throughout the year leading up to the centennial, engagement opportunities will be held for our diverse, highly accomplished community that now boasts more than 38,500 alumni across the globe.
