Blue Skies Over Beijing: Economic Growth and the Environment (TDPE Public Lecture)
Prof. Matthew E. Kahn will discuss his 2016 Princeton University Press book, Blue Skies over Beijing: Economic Growth and the Environment (joint with Siqi Zheng). This book studies the causes and consequences of urban China's local and global pollution challenges. It then discusses the political-economy question of whether local mayors and the Central Government have strong incentives to tackle the pollution challenge.
Matthew E. Kahn, PhD (Chicago) is Professor of Economics at the University of Southern California, and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is the author of Green Cities: Urban Growth and the Environment (Brookings, 2006), Heroes and Cowards: The Social Face of War (joint with Dora Costa) (Princeton U. Press 2009), Climatopolis (Basic Books, 2010), Fundamentals of Environmental and Urban Economics (e-book, 2016), and Blue Skies over Beijing: Economic Growth and the Environment in China (joint with Siqi Zheng) (Princeton U Press, 2016). His research, focusing on environmental and urban economics, has been published in top economics journals.
