We live in a world in which citizens of most countries are asking for greater involvement in collective decisions about a wide variety of political and policy problems. Many governments, non-governmental organizations, and even some corporations are responding by experimenting with ways to increase public participation. This presentation will describe how hundreds of researchers, practitioners and everyday citizens from across the globe are collaborating to catalogue and compare the performance of participatory political processes. To mark our centennial in the fall of 2024, the Maxwell School will hold special events and engagement opportunities to celebrate the many ways—across disciplines and borders—our community ever strives to, as the Oath says, “transmit this city not only not less, but greater, better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.”
