From Praying to the Gods to Fighting for Social Justice: Mithila painters and the SU Art Collection

In the 1970s, Professor H. Daniel Smith obtained some 70 Mithila painters from the Madhubani region of northern Bihar. In the early years of this tradition moving from the clay walls of their homes to paper, these paintings are an historical record of a major painting tradition. By the 21st century, the tradition had evolved in style and content. Renowned painter Shalinee Kumari will discuss the differences in thought and style between the early traditions on paper and the modern works by herself and her compatriots.
