Punctuated Violence: Caring Karna and the Dynamics of Translocal Householding in India - SAC

Based on oral histories of rural migrants to Delhi and Hyderabad, and visits to ten villages in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Ramamurthy develops the concept of punctuated violence to describe when and how violence shapes the provisioning and experience of care in the lives of rural migrants. By focusing on processes of caring in translocal households-- which distribute care across generations in geographically dispersed locations-- she puts circuits of care and violence at the center of understanding migration in contemporary India.
