The History Deaprtment presents the second annual Otey Scruggs Memorial Lecture. Prof. Daniel Sharfstein, who serves as the Tarkington Chair of Teaching Excellence and Director of the George Barrett Social Justice Program at Vanderbilt University, will be joining us. Prof. Sharfstein is member of the History faculty and Law School faculty at Vanderbilt, where his scholarship focuses on the legal histories of race in the United States. His most recent book Thunder in the Mountains: Chief Joseph, Oliver Otis Howard and the Nez Perce War details one of the most prominent struggles over indigenous sovereignty in the post-Civil War era, tracing the pursuit of hundreds of Nez Perce families across the American West as they tried to resist being forced onto reservations.

We’re Turning 100!

To mark our centennial in the fall of 2024, the Maxwell School will hold special events and engagement opportunities to celebrate the many ways—across disciplines and borders—our community ever strives to, as the Oath says, “transmit this city not only not less, but greater, better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.”

Throughout the year leading up to the centennial, engagement opportunities will be held for our diverse, highly accomplished community that now boasts more than 38,500 alumni across the globe.
