Azerbaijan and Current Developments in the Caspian Region

Situated between Iran and Russia, Azerbaijan is one of five independent Turkic states. In recent years, the country’s natural oil and gas wealth, as well as its strategic location, have turned it into an important regional leader in the South Caucasus.  The country accounts for nearly eighty percent of the economy of the region and is key in multinational energy projects essential to Europe's energy security. The country is also often acknowledged for its active support of U.S. led counterterrorism efforts, and for offering a low-cost supply route for NATO logistics to Afghanistan.
