Social Science PhD Program Leadership and Staff

Our faculty and staff put students at the center of their work as teachers and scholars dedicated to service in all its forms. We strive to create a warm and collegial environment that fosters the development of meaningful connections across the Maxwell community. Our primary goal is the academic and professional success of our students.

Unlike a department, the program does not have its own faculty. Students in the Social Science Doctoral Program work with faculty members from throughout the various academic departments and professional programs in the Maxwell School of Syracuse University, as well as social scientists in other units on campus.

The chair of the Social Science Ph.D. Program is a senior member of the Maxwell faculty appointed by the Dean. The chair oversees the administration of the program and typically serves as academic advisor to first year students prior to their choosing their Advisory Committee. Renée de Nevers is a professor in the Department of Public Administration and International Affairs. Her primary interests are in international security, international relations, and private military and security companies.
