Lanscapes of Life and Death: Placing the Spring Street Presbyterian Church in Ninteenth Century New York City
Bio
Katie is a doctoral candidate in anthropology at Syracuse University, focusing on historical archaeology. She holds a B.S. from Kent State University and a M.A. from the University of Cincinnati. She has participated in fieldwork at sites throughout England, Martinique, Barbados, and central New York. Her doctoral research explores landscapes of life and death in 19th century Manhattan, as viewed through the lens of the diverse, abolitionist Spring Street Presbyterian Church. This study uses GIS, historical address data, and mortuary artifacts excavated from the burial vaults associated with the church, to examine the influences of urbanization, economic revolution, and social reform on the movements and mortuary practices of the church congregation.
