Online EMPA experience converges with pandemic response

The World Health Organization declared the rapidly spreading coronavirus outbreak a pandemic on March 11, jolting Natalie Aguilera into plans for the Native American Health Center in Oakland, California, to prepare and respond. Visit to campus builds connections for Online EMPA students

“Online students benefit from the flexibility of being able to complete their coursework on their own schedule from the comfort of their own home, and while the connections they make with their peers and faculty are valuable, the value of place and institutional community that comes from being part of a school can be lacking,” said Nell S. Bartkowiak, director of the Online E.M.P.A. Program.

Inaugural online EMPA grads celebrate at Convocation

“One fear of launching the program online was that students may not feel the same deep connection to their peers and faculty and the Maxwell community, so we were pleasantly surprised by the turnout for graduation on campus and will be working on planning a reunion soon,” said Nell Bartkowiak, director of the E.M.P.A. program.

Maxwell’s online Executive MPA program graduates inaugural class

At the end of December, 15 students in Maxwell’s online Executive Master of Public Administration program (EMPA) completed coursework and became the program’s first graduating class. The program, ExecutiveMPA@Syracuse, includes instruction in policymaking, organizational management, and decision making. The inaugural class consists of 15 leaders, innovators, and public servants — a diverse group of experienced professionals with a common commitment to drive change in their communities.
