Hongying Wang on China's New Economic Diplomacy

Hongying, Associate Professor Political Science, University of Waterloo (Canada)

China recently announced the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), another sign of Beijing’s more activist foreign policy. The United States has expressed concerns, but more than thirty countries already have applied to join the AIIB, including Britain, France, Germany, and South Korea.  What are China’s motives for this and other initiatives in the global financial area? Will these schemes complement or undermine traditional multilateral institutions such as the World Bank?

Professor Wang writes and teaches on international political economy, international business and development, Asian politics, and China and global governance. She holds a BA from Peking University and a PhD from Princeton University, and taught a Syracuse University from 1998 to 2012.
