Democratic War? The Geopolitics of Democracy and the Conflict over Ukraine

The end of communism was expected to usher in a “democratic peace” in Europe, but by 2013, Russia saw democratization in Ukraine as a threat worth fighting over. How did democracy become a source of conflict, and what are the implications?

Paul D’Anieri studies and teaches international politics, and has written extensively on Ukrainian politics and relations between Ukraine and Russia. He is currently writing a book on the long-term sources of the war between Russia and Ukraine. He spent over a decade in leadership positions at three universities, and has written as well on the links between budgeting and the academic mission.
