He served as senior advisor at the Foreign Service Institute from 2020-21, U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan from 2017-20, U.S. ambassador to Turkey from 2014-17, executive secretary of the State Department from 2012-14 and U.S. ambassador to Georgia from 2009-12.

was appointed United States attorney for the Northern District of New York in August 2021. Freedman was nominated by President Biden and confirmed by the Senate in October 2021. She is the first woman confirmed for this position.
