"Planning the Occupation" Jimmy Johnson Military and Globalization Analyst Organizer with the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) Understanding Israeli control of public space and the built environment is key to grasping the essence of the Occupation, and the broader historical conflict between Israeli & Palestinians. From the use of radical architectural theory in urban warfare in the Balata Refugee Camp to the zoning and planning of the settlements to house demolitions in East Jerusalem, spatial politics literally define the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The presentation will focus on the spatial relations of the Occupation, the role of architects and planners in the conflict, and how the reorientation of geography is affecting chances for a sustainable peace. Immediately following the lecture, from 1:30 to 2:30 pm, Mr. Johnson will be talking to students about how to find jobs and internships at organizations like the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD). Moderator: Miriam F. Elman, Political Science and PARCC, Maxwell School. Lunch will be served.
