U.S.-Arab World Relations: The Differences between Democracy and Authoritarianism Joshua Stacher received his Ph.D. from the University of St. Andrews’ School of International Relations and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in the Middle East Studies Program at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School for Citizenship. He is currently working on a book that compares institutions and co-optation to explain authoritarian adaptation in Egypt and Syria. His research interests include hereditary succession in the Middle East as well as Islamist movements, in particular Egypt’s Society of Muslim Brothers.
