South Asia Center Presents: Anoop Sadanandan on Political Economy of Suicide: Why Do Farmers in India Commit Suicide? Over 200,000 farmers in India have committed suicide in the last 15 years. Most of these deaths have taken place in five of India's 28 states. What explains the high incidence of farm suicides in some states? And, more generally, why do farmers in India commit suicide? The talk seeks to explain these suicides in terms of broad structural changes India’s economy has experienced in the past few decades and identifies specific policies that contribute to the tragedy.
