East Asia Program Presents: Political and Strategic Challenges for Southeast Asia: Views from Manila and Jakarta; an East Asia Graduate Student Forum Julio Amador III Master’s Candidate in International Relations Evan Laksmana Doctoral Candidate in Political Science This forum will compare views from Indonesia and the Philippines on key issues facing the Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN). After the November 2012 East Asia Summit in Cambodia—attended by President Obama—what are the most important challenges for security, balance of power, governance, and democracy in the region? How will Manila and Jakarta respond to China’s growing influence and America’s renewed attention to the Asia Pacific? Julio Amador is with the Center for International Relations and Strategic Studies (CIRSS) of the Foreign Service Institute in Manila. Evan Laksmana is from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. Both are Fulbright Scholars at the Maxwell School.
