East Asia Program Presents:
From Pariah to Poster Child: Musings on Burma/Myanmar

After decades of authoritarian military rule, Burma—also known as Myanmar—adopted a series of reforms starting in 2011. Recognizing these changes, the U.S. and other countries have eased their sanctions. What explains the reforms, how deep are they, and what problems remain?

Maureen Aung-Thwin directs the Burma Project/Southeast Asia Initiative at the Open Society Foundations in New York. She serves on the Asia Advisory Board of Human Rights Watch and is a trustee of the Burma Studies Foundation. Born in Burma but blacklisted for nineteen years, she has been able to return during the past two years.
