The Anthropology Department presents Azra and Larisa Jašarević and their film Beekeeping in the End Times. Azra and Larisa will be joining remotely from Bosnia and Herzegovina following the in-person screening of their film.

Honey has been vanishing, beekeepers in Bosnia and Herzegovina complain. Two sisters travel across the country to find out why. Tracking the old honey routes from their mountaintop apiary through the wilderness and wastelands of Bosnia, the sisters gather traces of climate change and Muslim stories about the signs of the times.

Azra Jašarević is an indie filmmaker. A co-director of Beekeeping in the End Times and currently a team member of Taskovski Films Sales & Acquisitions, Azra eats and breathes movies. In the past, Azra has filmed and produced reportage fora Bosnian radio and TV station as well as managed a youth talent film school in the town of Tuzla, Bosnia.

Larisa Jašarević is an anthropologist and independent scholar. Her latest book, Beekeeping in the End Times (2024) and the documentary film by the same title concern Islamic eco-eschatology, honeybees and climate change. With a group of friends, Larisa has been writing the Children of Salik, a series of children's climate fiction books. Larisa formerly taught at the University of Chicago and was a visiting fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, Germany.
