CPR Methods Virtual Seminar (Political Science Department)
Survey research has experienced significant change in the past 50 years, but perhaps no more so than in the past decade. These include significant declines in participation; the rise of nonprobability/opt-in samples and the rise of nonprobability fraud; changes in preferred modalities from the predominant telephone to panels and address-based designs; and now, the impact and future of synthetic data. In this educational session, we'll share perspectives on challenges affecting the field and discuss practical considerations for maintaining data quality in a rapidly changing environment. Topics include:
- Choosing among probability, nonprobability and synthetic approaches based on research objectives
- The opportunities and limitations of synthetic data and AI in survey research
- Emerging threats to data quality, including fraud in opt-in surveys
- Strategies for conducting high-quality probability-based research efficiently and cost effectively
- How to decide on research designs that best fit your research needs, maximizing quality at any budget

David Dutwin, former president of the American Association for Public Opinion Research
