Doubled Up: Shared Households and the Precarious Lives of Families

Hope Harvey is an associate professor in the University of Kentucky's Martin School of Public Policy and Administration. She studies poverty and inequality, with a focus on housing and families. She is the author of Doubled Up: Shared Households and the Precarious Lives of Families (Princeton University Press, 2025), which examines how shared households serve as an important but limited private safety net in the United States. The book has received awards from the American Sociological Association's Population Section and the North Central Sociological Association.

Harvey has published research on residential decision-making, housing insecurity, and household and family complexity in journals such as City & Community, Demography, Journal of Marriage and Family, Social Forces, and Social Problems. She holds a Ph.D. in social policy and sociology from Harvard University and completed postdoctoral research at Cornell University.
