Gladys McCormick, Jay and Debe Moskowitz Endowed Chair in Mexico-U.S. Relations, was interviewed for the USA Today article "His son was killed by the Mexican cartel. This father was faced with the decision: Move or die." McCormick explained (former) Mexican President Felipe Calderón's strategy to crack down on drug trafficking organizations. Calderón’s strategy was to eliminate drug kingpins, McCormick said. The thinking was, "if you take off the head, the body will die." But rather than eliminating the cartels, the tactic has had a splintering effect in Guerrero and in other parts of the country, she said. As cartel leaders have been captured or killed, their members have created smaller organizations. 03/04/19
