China sent warplanes into Taiwan's air defense zone and cyber attacks have taken place amid U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit. But will these military exercises escalate? Vice Adm. (ret.) Robert Murrett, professor of practice of public administration and international affairs, weighs in on CNN's OutFront with Erin Burnett.

"I would hope this would be a measured response by China, which we expected based on Speaker Pelosi's visit," says Vice Adm. (ret.) Robert Murrett, professor of practice of public administration and international affairs. "But that cool heads will prevail on their side and that there will be some exercise activity that will probably take place over the next few days or so."

"And perhaps the cyber attacks have already, but it will be limited in scope and a measured response to what is happening there, largely for domestic consumption," Murrett says. "I don't think we want to underestimate the extent to which so much of this is for the Chinese public, especially the senior government officials because of the party congress that President Xi Jinping has coming up this fall," he says.

Murrett was also featured in the WAER article, "SU professor comments on Pelosi's Taiwan visit, advises the US to avoid upsetting China."
