"The Politics of Engagement with North Korea," co-authored by Stuart Thorson, professor emeritus of political science and international relations, and Moynihan Research Associate Frederick Carriere, was published in Science & Diplomacy.

Fred Carriere, research professor of political science, says that one of the major impediments to getting countries to denuclearize, whether the U.S., North Korea or Iran, is that "everybody always wants everything up front, with the promise that good things will follow later on, but few will ever be able to accept this strategy." 

Fred Carriere, research associate at the Moynihan Institute, provides his assessment on the discussions between Joseph Yun, the U.S. envoy for North Korea policy, and Pak Song-il, a senior North Korean diplomat at its UN mission in New York.

"Egypt might be a particularly fruitful pressure point in applying pressure to North Korea," says Fred Carriere, research professor of political science. "There may be other motivations, but this move would certainly be the latest in a pattern of applying pressure to North Korea."

"The two parties to the conflict should meet in a confidential setting where they can try to get at the deep roots of the conflict and mutually explore a possible solution," says Frederick Carriere, research professor of political science.
