Global Programs

Maxwell students have access to an incredibly diverse set of international programs. Through experiential learning, these programs enable students to develop a competitive advantage as international practitioners.

Global programs come in two main varieties:

Internships & Practical Experience
Combines professional development—typically in the form of an internship—with coursework.

Coursework Abroad
Specialized courses are available through Global Studies while World Partners allow students to study at universities around the globe.

Students may combine Coursework Abroad with internships or other practical experience. Participants are encouraged to reach out to the faculty leading the programs and relevant SU Centers in the region for support in obtaining practical experience in addition to the coursework.

Internships & Practical Experience

Strasbourg Center/Summer Internships in Strasbourg

SU maintains a center is Strasbourg, France, which offers two summer graduate level courses at the Center or course from partner institutionsthe University of Strasbourg or Sciences Po-Strasbourgduring the fall or spring terms. Students may do an internship, coursework or a combination of both. The summer course Religion, Law, and Human Rights in a Comparative Perspective explores religion and human rights in European and non-European jurisdictions. PAIA students have mainly interned at the Council of Europe, but other opportunities are available. Living with a host family is an option and students may be able to apply the summer course, French for Diplomacy, towards their degree.

SIT International Relations and Development Internships in Uganda

The School for International Training (SIT) is a renowned provider of experiences abroad for students. The Maxwell School and SIT are currently putting the finishing touches on an internship program in Uganda. After a one week orientation in Uganda, participants will intern at an NGO, multilateral organization, or a government office.

Singapore Summer Internship Program

Leading this program is a Whitman School Professor who combines a course with internships at a multinational firm. In the past few years, Maxwell students have interned at the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, YCH Logistics, Temasek’s Stewardship Asia Centre, and Pratt and Whitney.

Santiago Center

Universidad de Chile and Pontificia Universidad Catolica both offer courses to students at SU's Santiago Center. PAIA students have combined studies with internships at UN Women, Technoserve, Fundacion Multitudes, and other organizations. Spanish proficiency is required in this program and living with a host family is an option.

Maxwell-In-Washington

Every semester, our campus in Washington, DC offers programs of practical experience through night‑time courses and support for day‑time internships within the capital's international sector.

LondonEx

Students pursuing a JD in addition to the MAIR or MPA can intern with a barrister to gain experience in English, comparative, and international law.

Graduate Institute Geneva and Development and Humanitarian Internships

Graduate Maxwell students have the opportunity to choose from five summer courses at the Graduate Institute Geneva. These one-week intensive courses focus on various topics in international affairs, while students can also choose a two-week intensive UN course. Building off the Maxwell School’s long established Geneva program, students can also engage in an internship beginning in the summer, then continuing into the fall semester. Through their own efforts and assistance from key Maxwell connections, recent participants have interned with IOM, UNICEF, WFP, UNJIU, and WMO.

European and Global Internship Program in Brussels

Students engage in research and professional development in the fields of communications, governmental relations, journalism, policy, and many other areas focused on the European and broader international sphere. While completing an internship, participants will also complete a course taught by Georges Terzis, a faculty member at the Vesalius College Department of Communication Studies at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Maxwell students have interned at a wide variety of non-profits, government, and media organizations.

Coursework Abroad

Yonsei University, World Partner

PAIA students pursue coursework in English at the Graduate School of International Studies, where they can emphasize East Asian and Korean Peninsular affairs. Location: Seoul, Korea.

Career Tracks: Peace, Security, and Conflict or Regional – East Asia & South Asia

Waseda University, World Partner

Waseda University is situated in the world’s largest city, Tokyo, known for its vibrant Japanese and global atmosphere. Maxwell students can find international relations coursework in the Graduate School of Asian Pacific Studies. These English language courses focus upon the relationship between Japan and East Asia, international relations of the Pacific, and broader international development issues.

University of the West Indies, World Partner

UWI is the premier University of the Caribbean with a strong focus on that region. It consists of four campuses  across English speaking islands, but PAIA students would almost certainly take courses on the main campus in Jamaica. Graduate level areas of study include governance, geography, international public and development management, international business, and international economics and law to name a few. Location: Kingston, Jamaica.

Tsinghua University, World Partner

PAIA students take graduate level coursework in English at China’s renowned and globally ranked Tsinghua University through the School of Public Policy and Management. Location: Beijing, China.

SRAS Diplomacy and International Relations at Moscow State Institute of International Relations

Graduate courses in English and Russian focusing on international relations diplomacy, economics, and foreign policy from a Russian perspective are offered through the program provider SRAS. Location: Moscow, Russia.

Sciences Po, World Partner

Institut d'etudes politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) offers students coursework in both English and French. Most PAIA students enroll in courses in the Paris School of International Affairs, but with applicable French language skills, students may pursue additional coursework across the university. Location: Paris, France.

Korea University, World Partner

PAIA students enroll in English language courses focusing on commerce, development and cooperation, peace and security, or Korea studies at the Graduate School of International Studies. Location: Seoul, Korea.

Career Tracks: Peace, Security, and Conflict or Regional – East Asia & South Asia

European University at St. Petersburg, World Partner

St. Petersburg offers the opportunity to experience Eastern Europe while taking English language courses focused on Russian energy politics or Russian and Eurasian studies. EUSP is the only university in Russia which offers international study programs in English to students from North America, Western Europe, and other parts of the world.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS)

Students who are studying less commonly taught South Asian languages at the intermediate to advanced levels are eligible to apply for FLAS fellowships through Syracuse University to study Hindi or Urdu.

Counterterrorism Studies at the Interdisciplinary Center

Students will complete a three‑week executive counterterrorism studies program in Israel, then a short program on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process at Mitvim, the Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policies. Location: Herzliya, Israel.
