Charlie Hebdo and the Limits of Toleration

Professor Elisabetta Galeotti is a leading European expert on toleration and the author of a groundbreaking book on Toleration and Respect.

Reflecting on the massacre at the French magazine Charlie Hebdo, she raises some questions about the nature and limits of toleration. Drawing upon the techniques of political philosophy, her talk analyzes the concepts of freedom of expression, censorship, and the protection of religious sensibilities. She argues that more rather than less toleration is needed in Europe today—albeit –toleration of the right kind.

Professor Laurence Thomas (Syracuse University) will reply to Prof. Galeotti.

Professor Glyn Morgan (Syracuse University) will chair the discussion.

Refreshments will be provided.

Open to the public.
