U.S.-China Education Ties After Four Decades

The movement of students and scholars between China and the United States has grown from a trickle in the late 1970s to an annual bilateral exchange involving hundreds of thousands of graduate and undergraduate students. Madelyn Ross will discuss the growth of U.S.-China education exchange and examine its impact on individuals and academic institutions in each country.

Madelyn Ross was one of the first American students to study in China following the normalization of U.S.-China relations in 1979. She did graduate work at Fudan University in Shanghai and has lived and worked in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Taipei. She was previously Director of China Initiatives at George Mason University, and also spent nine years at the U.S.-China Business Council as editor of The China Business Review. She holds an M.A. in International Affairs from Columbia University and received a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Princeton University.
